Every employer has a duty of care to train their staff and driving a 4x4 vehicle off road or using a quad bike is no exception.

The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER’98) states
Self propelled equipment, including any attachments or towed equipment, should
only be driven by workers who have been trained to drive it safely.”

As all training should be needs driven, the training requirements of individual drivers can be catered for by using BORDA's three stage syllabus. All of these events are authorised under Statute 1371 of the Road traffic act 1992 (Off Road Regulations) and are carried out by a fully accredited British Off Road Driving Association instructor.

Deepdale Off Road provides training to many oganisations including National Park Authorities, Fell Rescue Teams, Utility Companies and St. John’s Ambulance.

BASIC LEVEL STANDARD LEVEL

A half day course for 2 drivers, or a full day course for 3 drivers.

This course ideally suits the driver who faces light off road driving on established tracks.

  • Daily vehicle checks
  • How 4x4 transmissions operate
  • Tyre & vehicle limitations
  • Route planning
  • Operator Safety & Legal Issues
  • The environment

A full day course for 2 drivers.

  • Ascents & descents
  • Ruts, ditches & side slopes

HIGHER LEVEL

A 2 day course for 2 drivers.
This course suits the driver who uses a 4x4 vehicle in more challenging terrain, allowing an extra day to develop more advanced skills and gain a better understanding of the techniques required to operate safely.

Training can take place using Deepdale’s Defender/quad bike, or to give a more realistic understanding of your own 4x4's capabilities, we would recommend using your vehicle.

The site at Deepdale is designed to allow the trainee to build skills as the event progresses learning the ability to assess terrain as the day evolves.

At the end of the event the trainee will have developed an understanding of the principles required to drive off road safely in the terrain they encounter at work.

Trainees receive a certificate of attendance at the end of the day issued by BORDA and endorsed by the IOPD.

Independent assessments and a certificate of competence are available for those that have received training if required.
